Tussen 1984 en 1999 stierven bij een gevechten tussen het Turkse leger en de PKK zo dertigduizend lieden en werden door dit Turkse leger meer vervolgens drieduizend dorpen betreffende de kaart geveegd.

Veel bevolkingsgroepen wonen door elkaar heen. Hierdoor kan zijn Irakees nationalisme niet zo vanzelfsprekend en krijgen de Koerden meer ruimte teneinde hun persoonlijk gezicht te behouden.
